AI designer in Luxembourg

A designer who shapes products in which artificial intelligence plays a real role, and who uses AI to make them. A manual page by Steven Lozach, Head of Design at Foyer Group.

Description

Most products now have a model somewhere in the loop: it suggests, summarises, sorts or answers. Designing for that is not drawing screens around a chatbot. It means deciding what the model may do, what the person stays in charge of, and what happens when the model is wrong, because it will be.

The second half of the job is the making. With AI coding agents, a designer can take an idea to working software, test it with real people, and hand engineers something that runs instead of a picture of something that might.

What an AI designer does

--design-the-intent

Starts from what the person is trying to do and where AI genuinely helps, not from what the model can generate.

--plan-for-uncertainty

Shows confidence and sources, offers undo, and gives people a clear way to correct the model.

--design-the-errors

Writes the failure states before the happy path ships, because trust is lost in the error, not in the demo.

--keep-a-human-in-control

AI proposes, the person decides, above all where money, health or rights are at stake.

--ship-working-software

Prototypes in code, with the design intent intact, so decisions are made on something real. More in design engineering with AI.

How I practise it

At Foyer Group

Since 2017 I have led the design team at Foyer Group, an insurance group in Luxembourg, across UX research, prototyping, UI and motion. Insurance is a good school for AI design: decisions touch people’s money and health, so clarity, trust and human control are not optional. My work is to hold one quality bar across products and brands, and to bring AI into how the team researches, designs and prototypes.

On Kawi

Kawi is an app that teaches Luxembourgish to children. I designed it and built it myself with AI coding agents, from the first sketch to the app, its website and its videos. It is where I test what I recommend: if a way of working does not hold up on a real product, I do not recommend it.

On this site

This site is part of the practice. It was written, designed and built with AI coding agents, with a design linter in the loop so the result does not look generated.

Why Luxembourg

Luxembourg is small, multilingual and dense with regulated industries: insurance, banking, funds, public services. Products here often run in three or four languages and under strict rules.

AI design in that context means multilingual by default, auditable by design, careful with personal data, and always clear about when people are dealing with a machine.

What people ask me about the job

Five questions that come up when I say I am an AI designer.

What is an AI designer?

A designer who shapes products in which AI plays a real role, decides how people and models work together, and uses AI tools to take those designs to working software.

Is an AI designer a prompt engineer?

No. Prompts are one material among others. The job is the experience around the model: intent, errors, trust, control, and the product that ships.

Does an AI designer still design interfaces?

Yes, and more of them reach production sooner, because the distance between a design and working software is shorter.
